Abstract

H5N1 a highly pathogenic avian influenza viruses are endemic among poultry in Indonesia. To date outbreaks of H5N1 viruses have been reported in 30 of the 33 provinces. Since 2005 human infections by the viruses in Indonesia have totaled 156 cases and 126 of 156 cases had died. Because direct and close contact with sick/dead poultry remains the most common risk factor for infection it is essential to estimate the prevalence of H5N1 virus among the poultry population and to track the currently spreading viral lineages. In this study we examined 200 chicken and duck tracheal/cloacal swab samples collected from H5N I virus in East Java farm areas such as Lamongan Bojonegoro Tuban and Bengawan Solo river from June to September of 2009. These samples were positive by a rapid diagnostic test and RT-PCR. We are now isolating the viruses in ovo for further genetic analysis.
