Abstract

Recent research interest in natural products has been increasingly focused on plant nutraceuticals. Nutraceuticals such as carotenoids flavonoids catechins polyphenols etc. have been recognised for their beneficial nutritional values in disease prevention. Palm oil one of the most important export commodities of the Malaysian agroindustry has been accepted as a nutritious source of edible oil. It is rich in carotenoids tocopherols vitamin E and tocotrienols. Crude palm oil contains the highest natural plant-source of tocotrienols a related compound of vitamin E. Despite the tremendous amount of experimental and epidemiological studies on the beneficial therapeutic values of tocotrienols no efforts have been devoted to isolating and producing tocotrienols on a large scale for commercial uses. This paper describes the process of isolation of tocotrienols from crude palm oil and their uses in the health food and cosmetic industries.
