Abstract

Chloroform and methanol extracts from Crinum asiaticum leaves were found to inhibit carrageenan-induced rat hind paw hyperalgesia which suggest they have antinociceptive activity. Fractionation of the chloroform extract the most active into 5 fractions found that the antinociceptive activity were in fractions f4 and f5. Phytochemical screening of fraction f5 the most active revealed the presence of alkaloids flavovoids coumarins saponins terpenoids essential oils bitter and cardiac glycosides. Fractionation of the chloroform extract of the plant into alkaloids and non-alkaloid found that the antinociceptive activity was in the non-alkaloid fraction.
