Abstract
Micromelum minutum is a tall shrub commonly found in limestone areas in Peninsula Malaysia Sabah and Sarawak. Previous reports have shown that the species contain coumarins polyxygenated flavonoids and oxazole carbazole and bis-indole alkaloids. In continuation of our works on the species another specimen was collected from Sabah for detailed phytochemical and biological studies. In this presentation we wish to report the isolation and structural elucidation of four new coumarins isolated from the chloroform extract of the leaves of Micromelum minutum Forst.F. Seem. The structure of the compounds were fully characterized by spectroscopic methods and identified as 7-4'-4-methyl-5-oxo-2-tetrahydrofuryl-3'-methyl-2'-butenyloxycoumarin F16 7-4'-4-methylene-5-oxo-2-tetrahydrofuryl-3'-methyl-2' 3'-epoxybutoxycoumarin MM7 7-4'-4-methylene-5-oxo-2-tetrahydrofuryl-3'-methyl-2' 3'dihydroxy-butoxy-8-hydroxycoumarin MM9/13 and 7-4'-4-methyl-5-oxo-2-tetrahydrofuryl-3'-methyl-2' 3'-dihydroxybutoxy8-hydroxycoumarin MM9/19.The biological screening of the compounds were also carried out and the cytotoxic test result showed that F16 MM7 and MM9/13 were significantly toxic to lymphoblastic leukemia cells with the IC50 values of 3.00 microgram/ml 3.93 microgram/ml and 3.98 micragram/ml respectively.
