Abstract

The antioxidative constituents of a plant comprise a variety of antioxidant molecules and enzymes. Among the antioxidant molecules are glutathione alpha-tocopherol ascorbate flavonoids some alkaloids and beta-carotenes. The antioxidant enzymes include ascorbate peroxidase glutathione reductase catalase peroxidases and superoxide dismutase. These enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidant defense mechanisms have emerged to protect cells against oxidative injury. These antioxidant compounds also may supply the human body with essential dietary antioxidants. Specific activities of catalase and ascorbate peroxidase as well as carotenoid contents were studied in 12 accessions of Centella asiatica. Data obtained showed that CA03 has the highest activity of catalase follwed by CA02 CA01 CA04 CA07 CA12 CA11 CA09 CA05 CA10 CA06 and the least activity was observed in CA08. Specific activity of ascorbate peroxidase for all 12 accessions showed that the highest avtivity of ascorbate peroxidase was observed in CA02 followed by CA11 CA06 CA01 CA09 CA03 CA10 CA04 CA08 CA07 CA05 and CA12 showed the lowest activity of ascorbate peroxidase. In addition assays for carotenoid contents showed that the highest concentration of carotenoid was observed in CA10 followed by CA09 CA07 CA04 CA11 CA01 CA05 CA06 CA12 CA80 CA02 with the lowest concentration observed in CA03.
