Abstract

The Danish Cooperation for Environment and Development DANCED programme was established by the Rio Conference. The aim of the DANCED programme is to help restore the global environment through projects in Southeast Asia Malaysia and Thailand and Southern Africa. In 1998 DANCED approved the first Partnership Facility in Malaysia between Ansaldo Volund A/S of Denmark and Enco Engineering Sdn. Bhd. to develop an environmental friendly and modern boiler system for palm oil industry. Boiler designers and combustion experts from Ansaldo Volund A/S were sent to Malaysia over a period of several months in 1997 and 1998 to study the operation of numerous boiler systems in the palm oil mills. The common problems faced by the palm oil millers with regards to their boiler systems were noted and examined and design criteria for the new boiler system were carefully formulated to address these problem. The following general design criteria were agreed upon in the design of the new boiler system: Environmental friendly with regards to boiler emissions. Improved performance to cater for steam demand during FFB sterilization. User friendly features in operation and maintenance. Higher efficiency for optimum use of the renewable energy in the fuel and. Budget friendly in overall design to cater for the Malaysian market. Ansaldo Volund A/S have designed and built hundreds of custom-made waste and biomass fired boilers worldwide. To date Enco have made and installed two units of this Volund designed boilers for the palm oil industry in this region. The first unit is a 25t hr-1 32 Barg boiler at Pofachem M Sdn Bhd in Klang Selangor while the other is a 30 t hr-1 29 Barg boiler at Vichitbhan Palmoil Co. Ltd. in Chumphon Thailand. Both boilers are now in operation and the end user welcome visitors with prior arrangement.
