Abstract

Palm pressed fibre is currently burnt as fuel in palm oil mills to generate steam and electricity. Our previous data showed that the residual oil extracted by organic solvent e.g. hexane contained high level of phytonutrients such as carotenes vitamin E and sterols. However our present study shows that the residual oil can also be extracted using supercritical fluid technology SCFT with certain advantages. SCFT is a novel separation process that uses the unique properties of a gas above its critical temperature and pressure to extract or fractionate mixture of components. Compared to conventional solvent extraction SCFT is comparatively less hazardous and more environmentally friendly. It has been demonstrated in our studies that SCFT using supercritical carbon dioxide SC-CO2 is able to selectively extract phytonutrients like carotenes vitamin E sterols and squalene from palm pressed fibre by manipulating the operating conditions like pressure and temperature. It can also selectively remove fatty acids and odoriferous materials. Complete oil extraction is done within 2 hr. Quality of the SC-CO2 extracted palm pressed fibre oil has also been determined and found to be free from phospholipids. The application of supercritical fluid chromato-graphy in the analyses of various palm fibre oil components will also be discussed.
