Abstract

Crude palm oil clarification process based on filtration system was designed and tested by Concept Engineering Sdn. Bhd. and Malaysian Palm Oil Board MPOB. The demonstration plant of membrane filter press with filtration area of 19m2 was installed at Krau Palm Oil Mill in collaboration with Felda Palm Industries Sdn. Bhd. The feeding of the fresh crude palm oil slurry was done at 2 - 3.5 kg cm2 pressure while squeezing of cake was done at 4 kg cm2 and 8 kg cm2. These treatments produced filter cake with oil content of 13 - 25 moisture of 52-68 and non-oily solids of 16-27. Further work is being carried out to optimize the filtration process so that the filter cake has minimum moisture and residual oil content. The cake produced can become suitable subtrates for the manufacture of fertilizer and animal feed.
