Syed Tajuddin Syed Hassan, . (2003) Ecological modelling: perspectives imperatives and prospectives. [Proceedings Paper]
Abstract
Ecological entities and functionalities both nature-centric and anthropocentric are mediated through ecological phenomena and processes. Their complexities limit description and quantification to small fragmented windows in time space and scale. Nevertheless the overall enveloping-frame of energy and matter cycles entrain ecological processes which can be dissected in a holistic or systems approach manner to elucidate relationships between ecological variables. The revolution in Information Communication Technology ICT enhances modelling of ecological processes beyond the realms of mathematical and statistical domains to those of multimedia simulation animation and robotics. Despite the availability of super-calculation and super-iteration capabilities of micro silicon chips ecological modelling imperates fundamental researches which yield statistics and parameters of the ecological entities and funcstionalities relationship-association diagnosis-of-demarcation and prediction of ecological processes. Hence ecological interactions in a continuum of time space and matters at varied and varying parameters can be generated. As a consequence visualisation products can be refined to mimic micro and macro-ecological processes in time space and scale. The ensuing downstream societal and industrial benefits are nebulous. Examples from my own researches and other related studies in various ecosystems are presented in order to highlight the perspectives imperatives and prospectives of ecological modelling.
