Abstract
Three decades ago there was little concern in developing an environmental education programme in Malaysia. This was fundamentally due to the lack of understanding and relevance at that time as the country was more concerned in speeding up economic development. The significant alteration of the countrys landscape through decades of continual clearing of forest for human settlements digging up ground for mineral exploitation and other environmentally unsound activities made us realise the importance of incorporating adequate environmental considerations into the countrys development programme. Through the third Malaysia Plan in 1976 the Government of Malaysia put forward a comprehensive environmental policy whereby the concept of environment became an integral part in the Malaysian education curricula. Since then education institutions and agencies of all levels began to change the existing education programmes by incorporating adquate environmental themes and to develop new curricula on resource management and conservation. Since the identification of fisheries as an important industry in the late 1970s the educationists further realised the relevance of aquatic environmental education with respect to fisheries and more programmes have been launched. This paper discusses the development present status and future prospects of fisheries and environmental education in Malaysia.
