Abstract

Yarimizu is the word for the elements of water flow in gardens designed in the traditional Japanese way. Most of the landscaped flows in Kyoto are drawn from natural rivers or via artificial water flows drawn from natural rivers. In this study we deal with the network of water flows formed by natural rivers and artificial water flows drawn from natural rivers including Yarimizu in gardens. The results of our study indicate that the water flow network has the hierarchical structure and it suggests a hierarchical spatial relationship between the human and natural environment. Based on this hierarchical network of water flows and using the concept of the space as the extended human body we set out to present a new conceptual model to discuss landscape planning and amenity planning of water space.
