Mohd Arip Kasmo, . (2004) Modern ethics in water management and its alternatives. [Proceedings Paper]
Abstract
The present global economic system capitalism and free market are strongly influenced by the philosophies of ethics which were developed during the Enlightenment period in the west. The two most important philosophies which formed the basis of capitalism and free market and subsequently the commercial society or market society are utilitarianism and hedonism which see ethics and morality are most readily associated with the market. Rationality in the commercial society is associated with the profit and loss calculation. Consequently water management is also strongly influenced by the philosophies. Water which is one of the most important basic need of human being become a commercial commodity in which the owner or the shareholders of the company determine the price of water. Probably there will come the time when the slogan of be thrifty in water usage is removed and people are encouraged to use more water in order to increase the companys revenue. Could there be any other alternatives compromise between commercialism and hedonism or could there be a compromise between commercialism and public service in water management. This paper discusses the prevalent ethics implemented at the present domestic and foreign water management system identifying the strength and weakness of the ethics concerned. Finally an alternative model of ethics in water management is presented.
