Abstract

The accumulation of heavy metals: cadmium Cd copper Cu zinc Zn lead Pb and iron Fe in Penaeus manodon was investigated. Samples were obtained from Pulau Pinang Kedah Perak. Trengganu Selangor Johore and Sabah. An atomic absorption spectrophotometer AAS Shimadzu Model 667 was used in the analysis of samples. The accumulation of heavy metals in muscles was found to be in the range of 68.0-186.0 microgram Zn/g 32.0-99.0 microgram Cu/g 10.7-22.0 microgram Fe/g 0.39-13.0 microgram Pb/g and 0.21-49.0 microgram Cd/g. In skin cuticles it ranged from 5.9-469.0 microgram Zn/g 23.0-74.0 microgram Cu/g 3.17-303.0 microgram Fe/g 1.68-54.0 microgram Pb/g and 0.38-139.0 microgram Cd/g. A high accumulation of the heavy metals Zn Fe Pb and Cd were found in samples from Gelang Patah Johore: 186 microgram Zn/g 212 microgram Fe/g 13.0 microgram Pb/g 49.0 g uCD/g in muscle tissues and 469.0 microgram Zn/g 303.0 microgram Fe/g 54.0 microgram Pb/g and 139.0 microgram Cd/g in skin cuticle. High accumulations of copper were detected in samples from Tanjung Piandang Perak and in skin cuticle from sample from Tawau Sabah which were found to be 99.0 microgram Cu/g and 74 microgram Cu/g respectively. The lowest accumulations of Zn and Cd in muscle tissues were detected in samples from Pontian Johore which were 68.0 microgram Zn/g and 0.211 microgram Cd/g respectively. Shrimp samples from Tanjung Piandang Perak accumulated the lowest amount of iron in muscle tissues: 10.71 microgram Fe/g. Accumulation of lead and copeer was low in samples from Terengganu: 1.68 microgram Pb/g and 0.38 microgram Cu/g respectively. This study shows that the accumulation of heavy metals in skin cuticle is higher than that in muscle tissues. The metals accumulated were in the following order Zn greater than Cu greater than Fe greater than Pb greater than Cd. The amount of accumulation in shrimp samples according to location was in the following order Johore greater than Pulau Pinang greater than Kedah greater than Selangor greater than Perak greater than Trengganu greater than Sabah.
