Abstract
Freshwater catfish clarias batrachus L. was cultured in circular ponds diameter 5 m and depth 1.2 m to evaluate the optimum stocking density to maximize fish production. The freshwater catfish fingerlings of 3.1-5.4 g were stocked at three densities of 200 300 and 400 fish/m3 and fed five times daily with commercial floating catfish pellets containing 45 protein. The trial period was 84 days. The trials were carried out in two replicates. Fish at stocking densities of 400 fish/m3 had the lowest average body weight of 158.59 g after 84 days compared to 183.27 g and 186.81 g at stocking densities of 200 and 300 fish/m3 respectively. The differences in body weight betwen fish at a stocking density of 400 fish/m3 and those at 200 fish/m3 and 300 fish/m3 were significant p is less than 0.05 but the difference between 200 fish/m3 and 300 fish/m3 were not significant. There were no significant p is greater than 0.05 differences in the survival rate and food conversion ratio among the treatments. The survival rate ranged from 51.80 to 57.40 and the food conversion ratio from 1.14 to 1.23. The results of this study indicate that the stocking densities of 300 fish/m3 gave a higher production than those of 200 and 400 fish/m3.
