Chan K.W., . (2001) ISO 14000 : the tool box for cost effective investment in environmental work for product development. [Proceedings Paper]
Abstract
The paper demonstrates the potential financial pay-off for adopting the strategic approach of implementing the ISO 14000 series of environmental management systems standards commencing from an oil palm mill. In all three instances of product development environmental performance evaluation EPE and environmental labelling EL with its declaration the ISO series of environmental management standards are applicable. In product development integrating environmental aspects through the use of design for environment DfE and life cycle assessment LCA standards these international accepted methodologies in identifying the environmental aspects will reduce the environmental impact thereby making the products more acceptable. For environmental performance companies in the present day trading of palm oil in the globalized market need to communicate their environmental performance both internally within the organization and externally through the use of EPE and El with its accompanying declaration in their annual environmental reports. Finally to realize the potential financial benefits the implementation of the ISO 14000 series of standards will lower the long term environmental expenses through recycle and reuse of waste thereby enhancing competitive edge yet with environmentally acceptable products.
