Physicochemical properties of bleaching earths

Abstract

The use of bleaching earths in palm oil industry is to remove trace metals colour precursors and various organic impurities that promote oxidation. The aim of this work is to characterize the physicochemical properties of the bleaching earths use for the refining of palm oil. It is part of an on-going effort to elucidate the effects of various physical and chemical properties of bleaching earths on the quality of refined palm oil. Techniques used in this work are scanning electron microscopy thermal analysis DTA and TGA X-ray analysis surface area pore-size and particle-size distribution. The bleaching earths being investigated in this study include acid-activated neutral/natural earths and synthetic adsorbent. Comparisons were made between acid-activated earth and other earths. The performance of the earths will also be presented.
