Abstract
This paper presents the preliminary data on the quality of oil extracted from palm mesocarp using supercritical carbon dioxide SC-CO2 as the extraction solvent. The results showed that this oil is of better quality as compared to commercial crude palm oil CPO with lower free fatty acids FFA less than 0.47 and peroxide value PV 2.3 meq kg-1 as compared to 3.5 of FFA and 4.4 meq kg-1 of PV found in CPO. The total oil yield was 75 based on the dried mesocarp. The oil is also more stable under accelerated oxidation study using Rancimat measurement with induction period of 20.5 hr at 120 degrees celcius as compared to 15.5 hr for the commercial CPO. Minor components including carotenes vitamin E sterols squalene and co-enzyme Q10 were also determined in the SFE extracted oil. The concentration of each of these components is comparable with those found in CPO. Under controlled SFE condition fractions enriched with these minor components can be obtained.
