Abstract

Twenty two Carica papaya varieties that were commonly grown in Malaysia could not be identified using cluster analysis based only on their vegetative morphology. When reproductive structures of the plants were used in the analysis the 22 papaya varieties could be clearly group into three main groups the dioecious trioecious and gynodiocious. The dioecious included papaya varieties that produces only male and female flowers. The trioecious group consisted of papaya varieties that produced male female and hermaphrodite flowers while the gynodioceous group had female and hermaphrodite trees. The grouping of the 22 papaya varieties remained unchanged when analysis were carried out based on both the vegetative and reproductive morphology of the plants.
