Abstract

Forestry Department of Peninsular Malaysia FDPM is aware of the need to ensure sufficient forest areas specifically dedicated for Amenity Forest. The importance for such forest has been specified under the National Forestry Policy 1978 Revised 1992 which specifies the need for the conservation of adequate forest areas for recreation eco-tourism and public awareness in forestry. To fulfill such need Community Forestry Programme was drawn up and implemented by the FDPM. Under this program one of the focus is in the aspect of environmental education to the public specifically to secondary school children. The public are welcome to enjoy the scenic beauty of forest to love the forest as well as to appreciate the role of forest in providing healthy living and in the maintenance of environmental and ecological stability. There are several major activities under this programme viz. Forest Camp Forest Talk Forest Day Forest Tour Forest Recreation Urban Forestry Village Forestry and Coastal Zone Tree Planting implemented by the FDPM to highlight the importance of forestry and how forests contribute to environment stability.Of these four activities Forest Camp is probably the most popular. Forest Camp specifically caters for the secondary school children and is co-organised with school identified by the Department of Education. The activity runs for about four days and is held in a forest recreational area or forest park. Forest Camps are organised in conjuction with long school holidays. School children take active part in a wide range of activities such as forestry quizzes preparation of herbarium tree identification forest tracking talk on soil and environmental stability and etc. The remaining other activities i.e. Forestry Talk Forestry Day and Forest Tour are normally organised for about 1 or 2 days over the week days or week end during the shorter school holidays. These activities are normally tailored to a specific audiences. Forest Recreation provides recreational enjoyment to the public. Forestry Day is a special day in the forestry calendar where the public are informed about the importance of keeping and managing forest resources and as part of the event for the public from all walks of life are invited to participate in tree planting activity. Urban Forestry Village Forestry and Recreation Forestry are also discussed in this paper.
