Abstract

Recreational fishing is an ever growing activity and in some parts of the world this occurs at the expense of commercial harvest fisheries. Recreational fishing while generating significant economic benefits generates many of the same ecological impacts as commercial fishing. These relate to both target species and the environment generally. Recreational fishing has additional dimensions. In some ways it has the potential to have greater ecological and economic effects than commercial fishing in the same fishery because of the potential number of participants overcapitalisation frequently the absence of imperative to catch a product and associated environmental issues such as anchor damage. Amenity issues e.g. crowding are also becoming more important. This paper canvasses the future of recreational fishing and its potential impacts on the environment.
