Abstract

The Japanese government has initiated and promoted several national projects to investigate the state of environmental pollution since the 1990s to evaluate the extent of its damages to clarify the causes and to develop restoration technologies. The project that I was involved in is Researches for the Future Program by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science. The theme for the research is Evaluation and Restoration of the Effects of Oil Pollution on Coastal Ecosystem and the Principal Investigator is Professor Mitsumasa Okada from the Department of Environmental Sciences Hiroshima University. The main themes for this project include: 1. Process of drifting ashore by spilled oil. 2. Penetrating process of spilled oil into tidal flat and seabed. aEffects of wave motion on the penetration. bEffects of tidal motion on the penetration. cTransport process of oil in sand. 3. Decomposition process of spilled oil by bacteria after penetration. 4. Influence exerted by the penetration on soluble components in seawater. 5. Evaluation of influences exerted by the penetration on the ecosystem and benthos. 6. Restorative techniques for damages due to oil pollution. We will discuss the theoretical aspects of 1 2 and 3 above from the fluid dynamics point of view and the results obtained based on numerical simulations. This work has been done with Drs. E. Baba T. Kumaki and H. Suito.
