Abstract

Fishponds in Malaysia attain relatively high primary productivity rates as a result of high water temperatures and the unlimiting light intensitites of the tropics. Although high gross photosynthetic productions are required to support sustainable fish yields the year-long growing season in the tropics compounded with the shallow nature of fishponds and the addition of organic and inorganic fertilizers often result in extreme deterioration of water quality. This in turn cause adverse effects on fish populations and can affect production. A total of 12 fishponds in Peninsular Malaysia were studied to determine i the water quality status of fishponds in Malaysia and ii the factors which influence water quality and primary productivity. The water quality index WQI of the fishponds studied range from 20 to 73 which indicate the extremely to moderately polluted nature of Malaysian fishponds. Ponds with high WQI values 61 - 73 were characterized by clear waters of low nutrient concentrations. Suspended solids pH phosphorus nitrogen and phytoplankton biomass were the main parameters in determining the biological oxygen demand BOD and chemical oxygen demand COD of the fishponds.
