Abstract

Macrobrachium rosenbergii de Man were studied by using the innovative flow-through system and compartmentalized tank system. The 12 d EC50 value 50 failure of egg to hatch of phenol for M. rosenbergii egg hatchability was estimated to be 0.96 mg/L. The 48h LC50 phenol values for larval stages 2 4 8 and 10 were 11.83 mg/L 16.46 mg/L 14.34 mg/L and 19.48 mg/L respectively. The 48h LC50 phenol for postlarvae PL21 PL28 and PL42 were 22.25 mg/L 27.39 mg/L and 29.92 mg/L respectively. While for their 96h LC50 values were 16.66 mg/L respectively. The sublethal effect of phenol on growth of postlarvae PL28 for a duration of 42 days in a flow-through system revealed that phenol concentration as low as 0.23 mg/L could cause 11.87 reduction of growth rate. The results of this study suggested that the safety level of phenol for M. rosenbergii egg hatchability larval and postlarvae rearing to be lower than 0.088 mg/L 0.118 mg/L and 0.198 mg/L respectively.
