Abstract
Three species of neritic tunas are found in Peninsular Malaysia while another three species of oceanic tunas are also found off Sabah and Sarawak. An increase in landings of tunas was noticed from 1980 to 1991. The tuna fish landings in 1980 and 1991 were 12 587 t and 28 057 t respectively. The tuna catches in Malaysia formed an average of 3.1 of the total marine fish landings. Longtail tuna Thunnus tonggol was the dominant species among the small tunas caught by local fishermen throughout the year but recently there was a drop in terms of percentage composition especially in 1992. The type of fishing gear used for catching tunas varies from one geographical area to another. Trolling and purse-seine net around the Luconia Shaoals was 15.5 t/haul. A lower catch rate was observed for trolling lines off Terengganu water. Results also indicated that the CPUE for local purse-seines declined from 356.5 kg/haul in 1990 to 186.4 kg/haul in 1992. Regular sampling at the main landing centres was undertaken to collect information on landings effort and some biological parameters. It was found that the annual tuna landings peaked in October. Pre-monsoon period was the best season for catching tunas on the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia.
