Abstract

A study of fish catch by a trawler and a research vessel off Kimanis Bay was carried out on board the Sahabat Research Vessel SRV and a commercial fishing boat JN/188/F. The average catch rate for commercial fish species trash fish and total catch calculated on SRV were found to be 39.1 kg/hr 73.2 kg/hr and 112.3 kg/hr while on JN/188/F they were 64.2 kg/hr 93.5 kg/hr and 157.7 kg/hr respectively. A total of 47 trawls landed 69 families comprising 157 species of fish. Ninety-four out of 157 species were commercial fish while the rest were trash fish. Calculation based on the total weight showed that the trash fish exceeded 30 of the catch. Juvenile commercial fish made up to 30 of the total trash fish landed. Nemipteridae Carangidae Ariidae Synodontidae and Sphyraenidae were the main families based on the percentage of total weight and the average catch rate. Standing stock for the Kimanis Bay fishing ground 2738 km2 was 6 802.6 t.
