Abstract

The revolution of information has conveyed a comprehensive and dramatic change to the way of living working and interpreting the world. The Geographic Information System GIS is a sophisticated systems which enable the linkage of geographic data to attribute data. Since computer and information technology is a contemporary trend of life style it is time for GIS to replace all the conventional procedures. Furthermore with the governments effort to implement multimedia super corridor and electronic government the utilization of GIS is formed to be vital. However the usage of GIS is still leading in engineering works especially in geotechnical engineering in which method for analytical decisions are still done through the conventional methods. This is done to the fact that most of the data on landslide occurences are still kept in a a form which could not be comprehended by normal users but only by relevant parties. With the renovation of the information technology a lot of works could be implemented efficiently including complicated task such as the monitoring of the occurrence of landslide. For instance GIS could identify potential areas for landslide by only logging in experimented parameters such as rain substances slope degree and type of soil. Therefore the objective of the study is to monitor potential areas for landslide using GIS software. This study aims to bring forward the abilities of GIS software compared to the conventional method and the case study location is in Penang. This study could benefit and develop the monitoring of landslide occurrence to the involved parties such as civil engineering developer local authorities and related agencies. Moreover this study could also contribute relevant and benefit guidance to the public and private sectors with techniques in determining potential landslide area using the GIS software. The utilization of GIS can prepare and contributes towards a profitable cost and effective service. The end product should be an effective information system and final potential map for landslide. With GIS support it could assist us to make a more effective and efficient decision on any difficulties that will arise.
