Abstract

This paper reports the behaviour of an uplift capacity of short pile anchor in sand. Although piles are usually embedded sufficiently deep to resist uplift the design needs of today may require short piles to be used to resist uplift. The influence of the various soil and pile parameters must be understood. The research conducted offers the rigorous understanding the influence of pile length diameter density and surface roughness in affecting the behaviour of these short anchor pile in sand. Results have shown that uplift failure is best predicted using the cylindrical shear model. Pile length has a higher influence over pile diameter on the uplift capacity. Rough piles exhibit a higher resistance due to the development of a shear zone adjacent to the shaft prior breakout. Sand packing is shown to have the greatest influence on pile capacity.
