Abstract
An attempt was made to reduce NH3 volatilisation from urea using humic acids derived from palm oil mill effluent POME and peat under laboratory regime. Humic acid HA-treated urea was matrixed at 40 50 and 60 w/w pelletised and then surface applied to two Malaysian soils of contrasting pH contained in enclosed chambers. The system was evaluated for NH3 volatilisation pH change and NH4 recovery. Results revealed that HA sharply reduced NH3 volatilisation from the acidic soil but enhanced that from the alkaline soil. However such reduction was not accompanied by a corresponding increase in NH4 recovery. Humic acids derived from undecomposed POME and peat showed superiority in effect as compared to HA derived from decomposed POME.
