Abstract

This paper presents the management and results of red sea bream ranching in Kagoshima Bay. The Kagoshima Prefecture Marine Ranching Association KPMRA is responsible for the full implementation of the ranching activity from fingerling production to release. The management of the released fingerlings is done by 18 fisheries cooperative associations FCAs. Pilot testing started in 1974 with full implementation from 1980 to present. Ranching of red sea bream has remarkably increased production making the Kagoshima case a success. A comparison of catch data of the inner and central areas showed that the former had a higher catch rate than the latter. Water temperature stability in both areas therefore is not a contributing factor to the difference in the red sea bream catch. The difference in catch could be due to the special configuration of the inner area semi-enclosed and well protected from oceanic current. The central area on the other hand is exposed to strong currents from the open sea thus facilitating an easy exit of the released fingerlings. This makes location an important factor to consider if success of ranching activity is to be envisioned.
