Abstract

Strips of polyester material impregnated with iron oxide Pi strip which have the ability to absorb phosphate P when embedded in soils were utilised to evaluate the field P status of flooded rice soils. Under glasshouse conditions soil P reacted on the strips was related to the levels of soil P treatments and embedded time. With these properties the strip was able to differentiate soils in terms of their P status. Field evaluation of the Pi strip on flooded rice soils in the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia showed good correlation with Brays 2 and Olsen extractants. It can therefore be inferred that the Pi strip test should be well correlated with P uptake of rice plants. The ease in handling the Pi strip in the field and in laboratory can make the method a good alternative for routine soil P test for flooded rice soils.
