Abstract

In vitro using fish cell culture models for assesing the extent of aquatic environmental pollution is reviewed. The usefulness of quantal end-point dilution procedure as an vitro bioassay for measuring the tolerable levels of different chemical toxicants such as formalin malachite green and an organophosphate compound Dipterex is discussed. Cytotoxicity studies are sensitive indicators of the actual effects of pollutants on aquatic organisms. The procedure can be effectively used to gauge the cytotoxic effect of a microbial endotoxin contamination using strains of Aeromonas hydrophila as a model. The veracity of cytotoxicity levels by a similar microbial endotoxin using microassay system has been developed and shows a more sensitive protocol.
