Abstract

In an attempt to explore the food value of zooplankton for commercial fish larval rearing lipid and fatty acid analyses were carried out on zooplankton collected from a brackish water lagoon Pantai Sri Tujuh Kelantan in the South China Sea during the dry monsoon May to August 1992 and the wet monsoon September and April 1993. Copepods comprised more than 70 of the total zooplankton with Eucalanus especially E. crassus and E. elonganus being the dominant genus. The lipid contents in zooplankton ranged from 0.24 to 1.64 wet weight 1.21 to 7.43 dry weight with higher values during the wet monsoon. The essential fatty acid contents showed high concentrations of eicosapentaenoic acid 20:5 omega3 and docosahexaenoic acid 22:6 omega3 with considerable amounts of linoleic acid 18:2 omega6. Polyethylenic acid contents were higher than those of monoethylenic acid while C18 polyunsaturated fatty acids PUFAs were minor constituents. This zooplankton is therefore regarded as having a desirable food value for commercial fish larval rearing.
