Abstract

A study of the coral reef fish fauna in Pulau Kapas and Pulau Gurnia off Terengganu coast has been underway since 1991. Fish visual census method by transects and general observations were carried out at five sites. A total of 160 species of coral reef fishes representing 47 families were identified and recorded throughout the survey. Many species were identified as new records for the fish fauna of Malaysia. In this study the most abundant families interms of numbers were Pomacentridae Labridae and Scaridae. Other species to a lesser abundance but were also regarded important as food fish include families such as Serranidae Lutjanidae and Haemulidae. The diversity and abundance of coral reef fishes varied with habitat and bottom conditions. Coral reef fishes are highly concentrated or confined to regions with high abundance of live corals rocky areas and sheltered regions such as under the jetty. The fish population in terms of species diversity and numbers decreases rapidly in regions covered with sand rubbles and dead corals.
