Abstract

A pot experiment was undertaken to select a compatible combination of bradyrhizobial strain and groundnut cultivars capable of producing high yields on unlimed and limed Bungor sandy clay loam. Four groundnut cultivars namely V13 Matjam Virginia Bunch and Indonesia were used. In addition to the uninoculated control which depended on native bradyrhizobia four other introduced Bradyrhizobium strains namely CB756 NC92 RRIM25 and NGR30 were included as single strain inoculants. Groundnut cv. V13 inoculated with Bradyrhizobium strain CB756 was found to produce high nodule number leaf N concentration and yield haulm during the early vegetative stage at day 30 D subscript 30 under unlimed and limed conditions; a greater effect was observed under the latter treatment. At D 106 under unlimed conditions groundnut cultivars V13 and Matjam produced almost similar pod yield when inoculated with Bradyrhizobium strains CB756 or NC92. However under limed conditions both cultivars produced significantly higher pod yield when inoculated with strain CB756 than when inoculated with NC92. This suggests that a high liming rate 4 mt GML haE-1 favoured the symbiosis with CB756.
