Abstract

Growing crops under rainshelter require massive input of fertilizers and other agrobiocides. Except for vegetable farming where crop rotation is practised flower farmer tends to grow the same type of flowers continuously. This leads to accumulation of high residual fertilizes in the soil. In Cameron Highlands where flowers have been growing for some years soil salinity can exceed 10 dS mE-1. The main salt constituents are square Ca K square Mg Na HCO subscript 3 SO CI NO subscript 3 and P. Heavy metals Mn Zn Cd As are also found in the soils. Soil topping and subsoiling followed by mixing provide a short-term solution. Opening up the plastic cover for leaching by rain is also effective. Soil desalinization by flooding and continous leaching proves to be highly effective in reducing soil salinity.
