Abstract
Field experiments were conducted to determine nitrogen requirement of pineapple cv. Gandul a Spanish group variety grown solely for canning industry. The experiments carried out at two locations in Peninsula Pineapple Plantations Simpang Renggam Johore on peat soil having different yield potential. Six levels of nitrogen viz. 0 200 400 600 800 and 1000 kg haE-1 as urea were applied at both the locations. The experiments were carried out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. The results of the experiments showed that the application of nitrogen had a significant effect on plant height fruit length and fruit weight at both the locations. Fruit diameter was influenced noticeably at location 1 whereas the number of leaves per plant changed significant with by N application at location 2. Fruit sugar and acidity did not show any significantly change as a result at nitrogen application. The largest fruits of 1.18 kg and 1.07 kg were produced with 1000 kg N application at location 1 and 2 respectively. From response function equation the maximum level and the economic optimum levels for nitrogen determined for Gandul were 919 and 857 kg haE-1 for location 1 and those for location 2 were 782 and 720 kg haE-1.
