Ernest Chai Oi Khun, . (2004) Option in managing logged-over forests in areas allocated for development of planted forest in Sarawak. [Proceedings Paper]
Abstract
More than one million hectares of the permanent forest estatePFE and areas used in shifting cultivation are proposed to be developed into planted forest for the next 15 to 20 years in Sarawak. In some of the logged-over Mixed Dipterocarp Forest MDF in Sarawak especially in the PFE there are forests regenerating well with sufficient stocking for intermediate size trees. Such areas may not necessary be converted for planted forests. A few possible options are discussed in this paper and are open for further debate. In general the option consider the regenerating conditions in the logged-over forest before a management decision is made. This paper also proposed that the path planting system may be one of the best approaches to rehabilitate the degrade lands in Sarawak. At the moment it is not known what is the best approach to manage these logged-over forest for planted forests in which the multiple complexity of plant factors soil and physical terrain integrated together. The development of planted forest is definitely an alternative source of raw materials for the timber industry in Sarawak. Planted forest is one of the approaches to rehabilitate the degrade lands for timber production and for the sustainable forest management in the State.
