Abstract

A large-scale clear cutting of forest in a piedmont of Mt. Ontake 35 53 N 137 28 E central Japan has been done in 1960s. This brought the disappearance of large area of old sub-alpine coniferous forest. Forest practices often tend to fragment old forest into isolated patches providing critical conditoins for species inhabit forest interiors. This study was carried out to clarify fragmentation trends of the forest in a piedmont of Mt. Ontake in order to reflect zoning of forest conservation and timber extraction. Archived aerial photographs available in Japan since 1950s have been frequently used for forestry purposes Spatial information on forest coverage legal land classification biodiversity and infrastructure were combined and analyzed using historical aerial photographs and a geographic information system GIS. Forest coverage was obtained from aerial photographs taken in six different years i.e. 1959 1969 1979 1989 200 and 2002. During the year of 1959-69 logging activities were spreading. A small area of old-growth forest areas was exempted from large-scale cutting. Reforestation was carried out during the year of 1979-1989. Differences were found in the process of forest recovery and stand density and these were reflected in the present forest structure.
