Abstract

This study focused on visual images in websites that useful for teaching material. In the amount of 649 pieces of visual images provided by 19 homogeneous environmental websites of Non-Governmental Organizations NGO representing Japan the United States the United Kingdom Germany and Switzerland were analyzed. It was found that websites sources exhibited great differences in the means of expression and visual classification of the visual images such as photographs graphics figures and tables. Environmental conservation campaign in the United States was more likely to use non-representational painting such as cartoon and drawing. Japan tended to show qualitative and quantitative graphs and diagrams. To promote their environmental concerns Germany and the United Kingdom used non-representation photographs and photographs of current events respectively. Finally Switzerland preferred artistic representational paintings scientific graphs and symbolic photographs all together.
