Abstract

The accurate and precise estimation of tree volumes are vital for efficient forest inventory and management. Log volume estimates are often made using log formulas such as Huber Smalian and Newton. However in Peninsular Malaysia the estimation of tree volume is made using other formulas for specific purposes such as pre-fellingpre-Fand post-felling post-F volume formulas. The purpose of this study was to assess the impact of different formulas on the accuracy of volume estimation for tropical timber species found in the second growth forests of Peninsular Malaysia. A preliminary study was conducted in Panti Forest Reserve Kota Tinggi Johor to compare tree volume estimation using Huber Smalian and pre-F formulas with the Newton formula. Results showed that there were significant differences between the pre-F and timber tagging volume estimation as compared to the actual volume estimation using the Newton formula. Results of this study can be used as a guide to select appropriate formulas to estimate standing tree volume of second growth forests in Peninsular Malaysia.
