Erosion Risk Map of Langkawi Island

Abstract

This Erosion Risk Map of Langkawi Island is prepared by using the erosivity R erodibility K and topographic LS factors with some modifications to the R and K factors to predict soil loss. The topographic factor LS was estimated using a nomograph or computed using a slope-effect equation. Using Arc/Info Geographical Information Systems GIS overlay modelling technique the three factors were used to generate the Erosion Risk Map of Langkawi Island. Information contained in the map would allow planners to predict the average rates of soil erosion and to recommend soil conservation measures to reduce soil loss to within permissible limits. Great care is required in managing areas with severe erosion risk. As a large part of these areas are on steep terrain and are therefore unsuitable for agriculture they should be left as forest reserves.
