Abstract

The current definition for Oxisols appears to be too restrictive and does not provide a proper basis for the classification of intergrades to this Order. In the field some of these intergrades which have kandic subsurface horizons do not show any evidences of moved clay despite an apparent clay increase with depth. Micromorphology showed that all soils with clay increase meeting the clay increase requirements of the argillic horizon do not necessarily show evidences of presence of moved clay. There are highly weathered soils with Low Activity Clay and with good evidences of moved clay which have charge characteristics other physico-chemical properties which are closer to properties of Oxisols than Ultisols and Alfisols. In these soil the physico-chemical properties have become the dominating properties of the soil compared to the clay coatings since the soils is in an advanced stage of soil formation as compared to Ultisols or Alfisols. As such it is evident that the current definition of Oxisols in Soil Taxonomy does not provide mutually exclusive classes either on a genetic process or property basis thereby justifying the need for some changes in the definition.
