Abstract

Soils of volcanic origin from Camiguin Island the Philippines were examined to assess the effect of cultivation on their chemical properties. The results showed that cation exchange capacity CEC and effective CEC ECEC were as much as 13 to 41 and 28 to 70 respectively lower in cultivated compared to uncultivated soils. This decrease in CEC and ECEC is due in part ot lowering of organic carbon O.C as a result of cultivation. Both decreases were reflected in the increased pH values in cultivated soils suggesting a reduction of negative surface charge density and their tendency to lose nutrient cations by leaching.
