Abstract

The demand for quality beef has been increasing in Thailand since the last 2-3 decades the imported value is currently estimated at about 5 million US dollars a year. Therefore an attempt to establish a quality beef breed suitable to farming environment in Thailand has been undertaken since 1969 by a group of animal scientists from Kasetsart University. In accordance with the long-term research and development effort a composite breed of 25 Thai native cattle 25 Brahman and 50 Charolais which being named Kamphaeng Saen KPS beef high genetic potential under the local Thai farming. In 1991 KPS Beef Breeders Association was founded to register the breed. The results of its first performance testing are shown in the paper. The genetic improvement for KPS beef cattle has been going on to its fifth generation to obtain the uniformity of color and conformation for genetic purification of the breed.
