Abstract
Ten Formosan Reeves muntjac Muntiacus reevesi micrurus bucks farmed in southern Taiwan 22.5 N 120.5 E were allotted to investigate the annual changes of semen characteristics. Result showed that they were in hard antler stage HAS from the 3rd triplet in September to the 1st triplet in June in next year and in velvet antler stage VAS from the 3rd triplet in June to the 3rd triplet in September. Semen containing sperm could be collected by artificial vagina AV throughout the year. The semen volume SV sperm concentration SC and sperm motility score SMS in HAS did not showed significant differences from those in VAS. Furthermore the SC value collected in both autumn and winter were significantly higher than that in summer 80.48- 41.60 121.90- 35.29 vs. 52.22- 31.12x 10 superscript 7ml respectively P is less than 0.05. It is proved that the Formosan Reeves muntjac bucks exhibit year-round fertility by the direct observation on live animals.
