Abstract
An initial survey was conducted in order to study the diversity and population of frogs in Pondok Tanjung Forest Reserve PTFR Malaysia. The PTFR is largely a freshwater swamp forest with small portion particularly on the southern parts made up of peat swamp. Field surveys were carried out from early of January 1999 through June 1999. The results showed that 13 species of frogs from three families were present there. Sixty eight individuals were collected and the most dominant species was Polypedates leucomystax with 22 adult individuals. Most of them were found on trees. A high density of Rana signata was also found with most of them collected along the river banks consisting of 11 adult individuals. Analysis of the data showed that the diversity evenness and richness of the amphibian community are low. Other species recorded were Bufo asper Bufo parvus Rana chalconota Rana nicobariensis Rana limnocharis Rana paramacrodon Leptobrachium nigrops Occidozyga laevis and Occidozyga lima. The list of amphibian species recorded at PTFR indicates that the Pondok Tanjung forest is partially disturbed.
