Abstract

A baseline study of the avifauna in the peat swamp forest PSF at Tasek Bera was conducted over a total of 29 days. The objective of this study was to assess species diversity of the avian community in that particular habitat. Two methods were utilized namely mist-netting and field observations as each method is biased to a different species assemblage. A total of 172 individuals from 29 species and 12 families were netted. Through observations 75 species from 36 familes were recorded including several migrant species. No bird species was found during the study that is entirely confine to PSF but some rare and vulnerable birds were recorded. Despite being within a protected area the avian community is facing threats from destruction and modification.
