Abstract

Free-range chicken can be intergrated in oil palm plantation to earn additional revenue and also save the cost of weeding. Fourteen thousand free range chicken were reared in batches of 1 000 birds month superscript -1 in a 2.0-hectare mature oil palm plantation over eighteen months period. The average mortality per batch was about 12.94 and 77.41 of the birds were sold. The average weight of the birds at twelve weeks old was 1.62 kg for th e Kampong crosses and 1.86 kg for the Naked Neck. The total cost of producing a 1 kg of bird ranges from RM 5.71 to RM 6.09. The intergration of free range chicken in oil palm plantation can also save the weeding costs 100.
