Abstract
A questionnaire-based survey was conducted among a sample of 90 smallholder cattle farmers in the Nzhele District of the Limpopo Province South Africa. Contrary to the situation in many other southern African regions social prestige did not constitute the main reason for farming with cattle but commercial purposes. A marked complimentarity in resource-use i.e. crop residues as animal forage has been demonstrated. It is concluded that cattle production in smallholder farming systems remain complex from a sociological economic and ecological perspective.
