Abstract
The paper discusses Research and Development R and D vital for the Malaysian fertilizer industry in establishing its future direction and philosophical approaches.In the past there was little emphasis on coordinating R and D approaches.The limited R and D activities implemented were sporadic in nature and specifically catering to the commercial needs of a particular manufacturing company.With the establishment of ASEAN Bintulu Fertilizer Sdn Bhd as well as other fertilizer plants that are being planned in Malaysia coupled with the target of a developed country by the year 2020 it is vital that proper emphasis be given to the R and D of the fertilizer industry.Only then can the industry attain the proper perspectives foe its future role.This paper will discuss i identification of R and D priorities ii acquisition of funds for R and D programmes iii monitoring and evaluating R and D activities iv maximising the utilization of natural resources available natural gas v savings on Malaysias foreign exchange vi increasing of local technical expertise vii manufacturing handling and utilising of premium grade fertilizer viii maintaining cleaner environment ix improving quality and increasing quantity of agricultural products and x future direction of Malaysian fertilizer industry.This paper concludes by stressing the need for proper management of the fertilizer research programmes through effective coordination monitoring evaluation and financial support by a central body.
